Merton in south-west London has a population of around 200,000 people, which makes it the fourth most densely populated outer London borough.

The number of people in Merton swells by around 500,000 for two weeks every summer when the world-famous All England Lawn Tennis Club hosts the annual Wimbledon tournament.

In addition to Wimbledon – which includes the Village, the Broadway and South Wimbledon – the borough’s main town centres are Mitcham, Morden, Raynes Park and Colliers Wood.

Merton’s eight state secondary schools bucked the national trend in 2016 with big improvements to the GCSE results achieved by pupils.

A total of 81% of pupils at Harris Academy Merton, Harris Academy Morden, Raynes Park High School, Ricards Lodge High School, Rutlish School, St Mark’s Academy, Ursuline High School and Wimbledon College achieved A*-C in English, up from 77% in 2015 and 21% above the national average for 2016.

Meanwhile, 77% of pupils at state schools in Merton achieved A*-C in maths, up from 72% in 2015 and 16% above the national average. In both English and maths, 72% of state school pupils in Merton achieved A*-C, a significant leap from 62% in 2016.

All 45 primary schools in Merton have nursery classes, with the exception of Park Community School – the borough’s newest primary education facility, which opened in September 2014.

The best performing primary schools in Merton include Bishop Gilpin CofE, Cranmer, Hollymount, Merton Park, St Mark’s, St Mary’s and Wimbledon Park. At least 95% of pupils at all these primary schools in Merton achieved level 4 or above at the end of key stage 2 for reading, writing and maths.

Merton is the only London borough that has London Underground, National Rail and London Tramlink services.

Tube trains in Merton run on both the District and Northern Lines and call at the following London Underground stations in the borough: Wimbledon, Wimbledon Park (both District Line), Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon and Morden (Northern Line).

Merton is served by an extensive rail network. The main line from London Waterloo runs through the borough from Earlsfield to New Malden. The line has three branches running to Tooting and Streatham; St Helier and Sutton; and Motspur Park and Epsom.

Tramlink stops in Merton include Mitcham Junction, Mitcham, Belgrave Walk, Phipps Bridge, Morden Road, Merton Park, Dundonald Road and Wimbledon.

There are a total of 29 bus routes running in Merton, including eight Night Bus services.
