More About The Local Area

Here’s What You Need to Know About Living In Harrow

London Borough of Harrow

Harrow is London’s 12th largest borough by area and is found on the north-western outer ring of Greater London and borders the Hertfordshire countryside.

Covering the HA1, HA2, HA3, HA4, HA5, HA7, HA8 and NW9, UB5, UB6, WD2 and WD23 postcode areas, Harrow is a borough of contrasts. It has high levels of affluence in such areas as Harrow-on-the-Hill, Pinner and Stanmore and high levels of deprivation in Wealdstone and South Harrow, where the local council is focusing its regeneration efforts.

Harrow is a diverse borough, having 63.8% of its population from ethnic communities, with the largest group being of Indian ethnicity. The borough can also claim to have the largest concentration of Sri Lankan Tamils in the UK and Ireland and the UK’s highest density of Gujarati Hindus, not to mention a large Jewish population centred around Stanmore.

Local Schools in Harrow

Harrow is also well regarded for its education and is home to a large campus of the University of Westminster, Harrow School (an independent boys’ school) and Harrow High School (a secondary academy school).

Population numbers in the London borough of Harrow are rising steadily, which is creating a massive surge in demand for school places. Despite this, of the 45 primary schools and 12 secondary schools under Local Education Authority control, 31 are rated outstanding by Ofsted and 24 as good.

Transport Links

When it comes to commuting, the borough is within easy reach of the M25 and has nine tube stations providing access to the Jubilee, Metropolitan, Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines plus six overground stations offering fast and frequent services to London.

However, Harrow also has a thriving local economy and has business growth rates among the best in north-west London. With over 10,000 businesses located in Harrow, the borough has a strong entrepreneurial tradition characterised by a thriving small business culture, with 91% of the companies employing less than 11 staff.

The borough is also home to a number of major national and international companies including Bovis Lend Lease, Racal Acoustics, Wickes, Ladbrokes, Bakkavör Pizza and Kodak. The latter has sold off large parts of its operation for housing but will remain in the borough.

Green space

One-fifth of the borough is composed of parkland and open spaces, creating a green belt equivalent to eight Hyde Parks.

One of the largest is 13-acre Pinner Memorial Park, which has a bowling green, a children’s playground, a café, an aviary and a flower garden. There are also plans to restore and extend West House, former home of the grandson of Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton, to provide a larger home for the museum featuring the work of artist and illustrator William Heath Robinson.

Although the main commercial base of the borough is Harrow, residential areas such as Belmont, Canons Park, Harrow Weald, Hatch End, Kenton, Pinner, Queensbury, Rayners Lane and Wealdstone provide a wide range of houses and properties to let, ranging from large family-sized homes in affluent North Harrow to former local authority accommodation in less well-off Wealdstone.
