Opinion is divided as to whether Haringey is classed as an inner or outer London borough.

Bordered by Enfield, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Islington, Camden and Barnet, the most familiar landmarks in the north London borough of Haringey’s 11 square miles include Alexandra Palace and Highgate Cemetery.

The famous Victorian burial ground, originally opened in 1839 has many famous occupants including sculptor and painter Henry Moore and Karl Marx.

However, football fans associate Haringey as the home of Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart Lane stadium.

A borough of stark contrasts

An estimated 193 languages are spoken in ethnically diverse Haringey, with over 35% of the borough’s 254,900 residents coming from ethinic minority backgrounds.

It is, however, a borough of stark contrasts with some parts in the west, such as Crouch End, Muswell Hill and Highgate, being among the wealthiest in the country, while on the eastern side there are areas that are among the most deprived 10% in the country.

Although 25% of Haringey is made up of green space, it is also classed as the 5th most deprived of the Greater London boroughs.

2. There are three rivers still flowing above ground in the borough. These are the River Moselle, the New River and the River Lea.

These include poet, literary critic and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge, author John Boynton Priestley, Vietnamese Communist revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh, violin player Yehudi Menuhin and pop stars Sting and George Michael.

Local Schools in Haringey

All of Haringey’s secondary schools, and most primary schools, are rated as Outstanding or Good by Ofsted.

The best-performing primary schools in the borough include Coleridge in Crouch End and Tetherdown in Muswell Hill, while Rokesly Infant and Junior School in Crouch End is also well-regarded by parents.

Highgate Wood, Fortismere, Alexandra Park School are among the best secondary schools in Haringey, although the borough did achieve record exam results at GCSE and A-level in 2015, which saw it buck a national trend of declining grades.

Good transport links

Haringey is in Transport for London’s travel zone 3. There are 16 National Rail, London Overground and London Underground stations in the borough, with the main Tube routes being the Victoria, Northern and Piccadilly lines. Nearly all rail and underground stations offer interchanges with local bus services, and there are numerous cycle lanes, cycle routes and bike parking facilities available throughout the borough.
