Covering about 8.5 square miles, the borough of Camden is a classic slice of inner London, where your neighbours are as likely to be social housing tenants as wealthy lawyers and arty creatives, and conversations in the street take place in a huge variety of languages.

Camden has a population of over 210,000 and includes the residential areas of Belsize, Primrose Hill, Highgate, Regent’s Park, Swiss Cottage plus the central London business districts of Holborn, Euston, Bloomsbury, Covent Garden and St Pancras.

However, the open spaces of Hampstead Heath, Parliament Hill and Kenwood are a sharp contrast to the youthful energy of Camden Town, subdivided houses in Kentish Town and West Hampstead and the relative deprivation of Kilburn and Gospel Oak.

In fact, it is ranked is ranked the 13th most deprived borough in London and 57th in England.

On the other hand, Camden’s geographic position means it has the third most valuable commercial property estate in London after Westminster and the City. Business premises in Camden were valued at £1.25bn in aggregate for the purposes of business rates in August 2014.

Camden’s inner London location – and large student population – also help explain why the borough has 36 music venues, 22 theatres, 38 art galleries, 8 cinemas and 16 museums.

The borough also has 11 higher education institutions – more than any other local authority area. These include University College London, Birkbeck University, the University of London, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Camden has some of the best performing primary schools in the country. The local authority’s website lists 42 primary schools and 11 secondary schools.

Parents of younger children rate Primrose Hill School, Eleanor Palmer Primary School and Christopher Hatton Primary School, while the best secondary schools in the borough include Parliament Hill School and Hampstead School.

Three of the 14 central London’s railway terminals – Euston, St Pancras International and King’s Cross – are located in the borough.

The North London Line service also serves Camden Road, Kentish Town West, Gospel Oak, Hampstead Heath, Finchley Road & Frognal and West Hampstead overground stations.

The Northern, Victoria, Piccadilly, Central, Jubilee, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan London Underground lines also run through the borough of Camden.
