Educating Bexley

Ninety per cent of primary age pupils in Bexley attend a school that is rated good or outstanding by Ofsted, according to the watchdog’s latest annual report.

Noted primary schools in the borough include Christ Church (Erith) CofE School, Belvedere Junior School and Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School in Sidcup.

Figures released by Ofsted also reveal the performance of schools in Bexley at GCSE and A level is above the London average.

At the top of the list for GCSE results in 2015 was Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School with 98% of its pupils taking the exams gaining five or more A* to C grades including English and maths. Following closely behind was Bexley Grammar School in Welling with 97% of its GCSE students hitting the required mark.

Third was Beths Grammar School in Bexley also with 97%, with St Catherine’s Catholic School for Girls in Bexleyheath next with 81% and Harris Academy in Falconwood fifth with 73%.

At the top of the list for the points scored at A level and the International Baccalaureate per student in the borough was Bexley Grammar School, followed by Townley Grammar School, Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, Beths Grammar School and Blackfen School for Girls, which has a mixed sex sixth form.

Transport in Bexley

Bexley is one of only six London boroughs not to have at least one London Underground station within its boundaries, although it does have 11 National Rail stations. These are: Albany Park, Barnehurst, Belvedere, Bexley, Bexleyheath, Crayford, Erith, Falconwood, Sidcup, Slade Green and Welling, while Abbey Wood Station is located on the borough boundary with Greenwich.

When Crossrail opens in 2019 journeys from Abbey Wood to the centre of London will be reduced to just 25 minutes, with up to 12 extra trains an hour linking Abbey Wood with the city.

Road access to and from Bexley is good. The major trunk roads serving the borough are the A2 and A20 which both connect to the M25.

London City Airport is the closest to serve Bexley, being around 30 minutes away. London Heathrow, London Stansted and London Gatwick airports are also easily reachable within an hour’s travel.
