Here’s What You Need to Know About Living In Barnet

London Borough of Barnet

Covering no less than 21 postcode areas, Barnet is a London borough of great contrasts.

Sitting at the very edge of north London, Barnet faces the city in one direction and the rolling Hertfordshire countryside in the other. The borough – which at its widest point is 12.5 miles by 11.7miles in length – contains 20 town centres, 2,652 streets, more than 135,900 households and has a population of around 356,000, although this is forecast to grow by 23% over the next decade.

Transport links

Ofsted has judged 89% of the borough’s schools good or outstanding, while good transport links provide easy access to central London and the M25.

High Barnet (Zone 5) is the last stop on the Northern line, with a journey time to Leicester Square of about 40 minutes. There is also a train service from Hadley Wood (Zone 6), New Barnet (Zone 5) and Oakleigh Park (Zone 4) to King’s Cross and Moorgate.

But not every worker travels to London. Barnet has a history of entrepreneurship and enterprise and has the fourth highest number of VAT-registered businesses in London.

Green space & Amenities in Barnet

Bus routes in the borough include the 240 from Mill Hill East to Mill Hill Broadway, which gives passengers stunning views of Totteridge Valley, Wembley Arch and the house where 60s icon Patrick McGoohan lived while filming The Prisoner.

Much of the borough is in the Metropolitan Green Belt. It has more than 200 green spaces, 16 of which are regarded as premier parks, while Oak Hill Park, Victoria Park, Sunny Hill Park and Edgwarebury Park all have a Green Flag Award.

Barnet also has 67 nature reserves including Oak Hill Wood, Rowley Green Common, Scratchwood, Darland’s Lake Nature Reserve and Moat Mount Open Space.
